The Government of India has a flexible policy towards visitors and it encourages Medical Tourism to India. Visitors intending to come to India for the primary purpose of treatment can apply for a Medical Visa for themselves, or if they are planning to assist or nurse someone then a Medical Attendant Visa should be lodged.
Government of India allows this visa to be 60 days of validity by default. However, the new visa policy of India allows the paper based medical visa to be extended for up to 180 days. Note that if you entered India on an Indian Tourist Visa or Indian Businss Visa and needed medical assistance during your stay in Indian which was not anticipated in advance, then you do not require a Medical Visa. Also, you do not require a medical visa for just consulting a doctor for your condition. However, for undergoing a treatment, a Medical Visa is a requirement.
